Industry is responsible for negotiating local and regional support for their activities.

Government will work with industry in areas where the industry moves into the production phase to ensure that these communities have access to information on the impact of industry development on their communities, opportunities to participate in ongoing monitoring, and appropriate arrangements to raise concerns and opportunities to improve local outcomes.

The NT Government is considering mechanisms and guidance for building relationships with community as part of the Social Responsibility to Operate including the ongoing engagement and monitoring of community sentiment, and the Community Engagement and Information program delivered by an Independent third party (CSIRO).

The NT Government signed a five-year agreement with CSIRO in December 2021 to deliver the Community Engagement and Information Program face-to-face through a full-time dedicated position based in the Northern Territory.

CSIRO appointed the new Community Engagement and Information Program lead in April 2022, based in Darwin in the Indigenous Science and Knowledge team with CSIRO Land and Water Business Unit. The team conducts a range of research with Indigenous co-research partners to address the challenges and harness future opportunities to support Indigenous leaders and their research and innovation agendas.
