Industry is responsible for negotiating local and regional support for their activities.

Government will work with industry in areas where the industry moves into the production phase to ensure that these communities have access to information on the impact of industry development on their communities, opportunities to participate in ongoing monitoring, and appropriate arrangements to raise concerns and opportunities to improve outcomes.

The Northern Territory Government has developed mechanisms and guidance for building relationships with community, including the ongoing engagement and monitoring of community sentiment, and the Community Engagement and Information Program delivered by an independent third party (CSIRO).

The NT Government signed a 5-year agreement with CSIRO in December 2021 to deliver the Community Engagement and Information Program face-to-face through a full-time dedicated position based in the Northern Territory and CSIRO appointed a Program lead in April 2022.

The Social, Cultural and Economic Strategic Regional Environment and Baseline Assessment (on the DEPWS website) considered social cohesion at the community and regional levels and provided recommendations for ongoing monitoring including an enhanced community information program and governance approach to ensure it is informed by local communities and cultural values.
