Implementation Progress

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources will consult with other Australian jurisdictions in relation to approaches to the chain of responsibility for environmental obligations on gas companies and related parties. This concept would work in with other requirements such as financial assurance required by recommendation 14.13 and the levy required by 14.14. These obligations will be imposed via legislation.

It is noted that the concept of chain of responsibility legislation has been used in Australia in a range of subject areas including heavy vehicle regulation for a number of years. Recently it has been introduced to environmental legislation in Queensland.
