Implementation progress

The NT Government is developing an NT Strategic Water Plan as a broader water management strategy that will consider the issue of water pricing.

A Directions Paper was released in September 2021, with Territorians and stakeholders given the opportunity to provide their input and ideas for water security. The Directions Paper was published on the Have Your Say website. Consultation has now closed and submissions are being reviewed, noting pricing for water extraction was identified as a key issue.

The NT Government is dedicated to working collaboratively with the community to achieve the right balance between water demand and supply. It will consider options and next steps for a price on water extraction for use by different industry types, including onshore shale gas activities. A draft Strategic Water Plan is likely to be released for public comment before the end of 2022.
