Implementation progress

The NT Government released its ‘Northern Territory Offsets Framework’ and ‘Northern Territory Offsets Principles’ in July 2020. The principles will support the development of consistent offsetting arrangements and requirements for projects with significant residual environmental impacts in the Northern Territory.

Under the Framework, individual and targeted biodiversity and greenhouse gas offset policies will be developed. Work on these policies is underway with:

  • Consultation on the Draft Greenhouse Gas Emissions Offsets Policy has concluded.
  • Approval of final Greenhouse Gas Emissions Offsets Policy expected mid-2022.
  • Draft Biodiversity Offsets Policy anticipated to be released for consultation in mid-2022.

The NT Government will continue to support local Aboriginal ranger programs. Petroleum companies will also be encouraged to use the skills and expertise of Aboriginal ranger groups.
